About the Tour

Experience one of Iceland’s most exciting outdoor adventures on the spectacular Fálkaklettur Via Ferrata — a guided climb that combines breathtaking scenery, adrenaline, and achievement. Named after “Falcon Rock,” this unique route is built into the cliffs of Mt. Esja and offers sweeping views over the ocean toward Reykjavík.

Our tours are led by trained and experienced guides who support you every step of the way — whether you’re a complete beginner or a more experienced climber. No prior climbing experience is required. You’ll be equipped with professional Via Ferrata gear that meets strict European safety standards.

Reaching the top of Fálkaklettur is an accomplishment you can truly be proud of. It’s a chance to step outside your comfort zone, embrace the challenge, and enjoy one of the most stunning mountain viewpoints near Reykjavík.

  The Highlight

One of the most thrilling moments on the Fálkaklettur Via Ferrata is crossing the exposed suspension bridge high above the rocky cliffs. Suspended between two vertical faces of Falcon Rock, the bridge offers an exhilarating combination of challenge, excitement, and breathtaking views that make it the standout feature of the entire climb. For many participants, this moment becomes the ultimate memory of the tour.

  Detailed Itinerary

You’ll meet your guide at the Mt. Esja Hiking Center, just 25 minutes from Reykjavík. After a warm welcome, your guide will check you in, answer any questions, and make sure everyone is ready for the adventure.

Your guide will equip you with all necessary Via Ferrata gear, including helmet, harness, and lanyards. You’ll receive a clear and friendly introduction to how the Via Ferrata system works, how to safely move on the cables and ladders, basic climbing techniques, and what to expect on the route. Even complete beginners feel confident before starting.

You’ll begin with a gentle hike along the lower slopes of Mt. Esja, enjoying fresh mountain air, beautiful views toward the ocean, and first glimpses of the spectacular Fálkaklettur cliff. This warm-up prepares your body for the climb ahead.

The adventure begins as you clip into the steel safety cable and start making your way up “Falcon Rock”. Along the route you’ll experience vertical rock faces supported by secure steel rungs, narrow ledges and exciting exposed sections, a mix of easier and more challenging parts, continuous safety from the cable system — and incredible ocean and Reykjavík views that get better with every step.

After crossing the exposed suspension bridge high above the rocky cliffs, you reach the top of the route. Take a moment to soak in the panoramic views — Mt. Esja, the bay, and Reykjavík in the distance. Perfect time for photos, a quick snack, a well-earned rest, and celebrating your accomplishment.

You’ll descend via a scenic hiking trail back toward the base, letting your legs relax after the climb. Your guide will lead the way and share local stories and insights about the mountain and surrounding area.

The tour ends where it began. You’ll return your gear and enjoy some final photos and conversations.
